Maha and Company is a Southern California based Dance Company dedicated to cultural awareness through movement experimentation in traditional and fusion forms. The Company strives to challenge the audience and its dancers in defining movement and dance structure. Maha and Company investigates the purpose of dance as a medium of expression and an outlet of emotional, political and social complexities; curiously delving into the amalgamation of different movement motifs. A modern piece inspired by the stories of dancers’ loved ones who have immigrated to the U.S. The stories include journeys of individuals from various countries.
Music: Traditional Yaqui
An interpretation of the Yaqui folk dance portraying the story of a deer (venado). We see the deer begins by exploring the space then it is entranced by the river and waterfalls. The hunters enter the space and kill the deer for meat and goods; then the village women prepare the carcass. The piece ends with the spirit of the deer leaving its physical host and passing on into the afterlife.
